  • Acne Myths Exposed

  • As with most conditions there is a great deal of information distributed about acne and its causes and that information is a mixture of both fiction and fact. Thus, let us look at a few of the things that are being circulated and see if we can divide the fiction from the fact.

    Diet

    First of all there is no direct link between eating things like chocolate or greasy hamburgers or drinking too many soft drinks and getting pimples. What is true is that what we eat plays a role in all the body's systems and therefore it does have a small role to play in whether acne is more or less likely.

    For instance, greasy foods do not directly translate into rising oil production from the sebaceous glands which adds to acne, although foods which do increase oil production would of course have an effect. However, iodized salt is the only food substance which has been demonstrated to have any measurable effect and it only worsens existing acne and does not cause it.

    Hygiene

    The chances of getting an acne spot rise when a pore gets blocked and bacteria get trapped inside. This means that hygiene habits that tend to close the pores can play a role. However this effect is only very small and the bacteria and dead cell skins that get trapped and cannot work their way out of the pore are influenced only to a minor degree by insufficient regular face washing.

    But, once acne arrives then good skin hygiene is especially important and mild cleansing twice each day with soap and water will help in treating acne and promoting healthy skin in general. Good hygiene is an excellent for a number of reasons although it helps most in treating acne because it provides a good surface for medications to do their work most effectively.

    Spots are strongly influenced by excess production of sebum (skin oil) that is triggered principally by hormones and harsh cleansers that are applied roughly do not only clear away this excess oil but also damages the skin's ability to cope with it.

    Stress

    As stress tends to weaken the body's immune system and influence its level of hormones it may be thought that stress would play a role in the onset of acne. However, there is no evidence that stress can cause acne, although there is some evidence to suggest that it could play a minor role after acne has arrived.

    One difficulty in assessing the role of stress is that people who are suffering from chronic stress normally also suffer from additional health problems that complicate the picture. Do not forget too that we are talking here about clinical stress and not just the worries which we all experience as part of the ups and downs of everyday living.

    Medications

    A lot of individuals are tempted to increase the dosage of an over-the-counter medication believing that if a little medicine does a bit of good then a lot will do a lot of good. Unhappily, this is not the case and it both wastes medicine and can actually damage the skin. Always follow the instructions on any acne medication and if an over-the-counter medicine is not showing signs of working within a reasonable period of time then you should consult your dermatologist.
